100.9NRG the desert’s dance station

the nrg story

NRG Radio began in January 2021, when NRG Media of Florida leased 93.7 WKEY-FM Key West from a local family and began broadcasting as ‘93-7 NRG, the Beat of the Keys.’  The format was ‘Disco in the Morning and Dance All Day.’  This format was well-received by the Key West community and we remained on-air there for more than a year-and-a-half.  But we always wanted to return to Southern California and operate the station there. I the summer of 2022, circumstances in Key West changed and the ownership of the station we were leasing changed.  As lucky would have it, an opportunity presented itself in the Palm Springs market at almost the same moment, and we jumped.  We leased K265FH, a low-power translator station broadcasting to the Coachella Valley on 100.9FM.  We launched ‘100.9NRG’ on-air in late August, 2022 and wrapped things up in Florida.

100.9NRG broadcast 24-hours-a-day to the Coachella Valley from a transmitter atop Edom Hill, North of Cathedral City next to Interstate 10.  Listener response to NRG was fantastic and very consistent: ‘We love your music.’ Of course, it’s not OUR music. It’s the way we program the music, a proprietary method and not by the Billboard music charts. It’s a sound that evolves throughout the day and night.  It’s unlike any other station.

Each day begins at 6am with ‘Disco in the Morning.’ A blend of classic disco, remixes and New Disco, Disco in the Morning celebrates all aspects of the Disco genre.   Weekdays at 12pm, 100.9NRG features the ‘Noontime Disco Mix’ with DJ SallyBoy Curto in the mix without commercial interruption. Dance your way through your lunch hour with classic disco tracks you know and love.

Dance programming begins on 100.9NRG at 1pm weekdays (12pm Saturday and Sunday) featuring upbeat vocal house, remixes of pop favorites and other light dance tracks.  In the evening, 100.9NRG evolves into a harder, more club sound. Featuring deeper tracks normally only heard in the clubs, NRG is the soundtrack to your party any night of the week.  We edit out the DJ ramps into and out of each track.  Late nights, the NRG sound evolves once more, featuring softer, chill house and deep instrumentals to help you wind down the day before sunrise. Then at 6:00am, the next day starts anew with Disco in the Morning.

Friday nights beginning at 8:00pm, 100.9NRG celebrates the dance sounds from the 1980s and 1990s with ‘Old School Friday Night.’  Saturday nights, 100.9NRG is brining the club to you with ‘NRG in the MIX.’ This show features hour-long DJ mixes from top DJs.

Sadly, 100.9NRG went off-air late September 2023.  Despite overwhelming support in the community, We simply could not sustain the costs of the station further.  However, if you’re reading this, you’ve obviously discovered that we continue streaming the same NRG programming online via the station’s website.  And after careful consideration, we have elected to embrace this online delivery method and relaunch the station as stream-only to a wider audience than just the Coachella Valley.  We’ll have more about all of this in early 2026.  As they say in our business - Stay tuned!

A MESSAGE FROM our founder

I’m David Reese and I created NRG. I’m a familiar face in Coachella Valley media circles; I’m the News Director at NBC Palm Springs (KMIR-TV).  It’s my second stint at the station; I was News Director there from 2013-2017. Before and after that, I held news management positions at several Los Angeles TV stations.

Radio is my first love. I began my broadcasting career at my high school radio station and I always said ‘I’m going to own a dance music radio station someday.’ I felt there was a gap in the market for a true dance station, and at the beginning of the pandemic, I decided to pursue my dream of creating and operating a dance radio station.  I called it NRG.

I first launched NRG on a station in Key West, Florida in January 2021. Now I’m thrilled to be back in the Coachella Valley on 100.9FM. This is where I always knew NRG was meant to be.

The NRG sound is truly unique. It’s a proprietary mix of Disco and Dance hits spanning more than 40 years. The majority of the tracks we play have been edited specifically for NRG, so when we say you won’t hear this music anywhere else, we really mean it!

I invite you to listen and let me know what you think! You can email me at david@nrgbroadcasting or hit me up on Instagram. Thanks for taking the time to read this and for your interest in 100.9NRG.
